1987 Notes and Anecdotes
Scilly Quiz
We arrange a quiz in the Beachcomber Hotel and a mini fracas follows amongst the competing teams of cricketers as the correctness of answers given are called into question. |

Sunday early am. News quickly circulates of a member of the team (to remain anonymous) performing a 'cupboard walk' (similar to a Michael Jackson 'Moonwalk' but in a cupboard) in the Beachcomber in the early hours of the morning. In the dark believing the cupboard door is the entrance the bathroom the gentleman concerned is saved from urinating in the wrong place by his alert room sharing partner. In Search of Stump Holes
Sunday afternoon breaks into glorious sunshine, and we set sail for Tresco on Frazer’s famous boat the Black Swan. The humidity high and the weather dry and bright it is a great afternoon for cricket. It was a pity therefore that the islanders had cancelled the match in the morning. We meander through a concrete roadway bordered on each side by plains of scorched earth and thin blades of parched grass until we encounter a flat field. In the background amidst a coppice of exotic trees stands the Abbey and to our right a shimmering blue pool. "Cricket pitch!" exclaims Captain Tim. Following a frenetic search of the grass we find stump holes and as there is no definition between the wicket and the outfield, we are rather pleased that the game was cancelled. Silly Bike Ride
Saturday am - A bicycle ride to Old Town and beyond follows breakfast. Innocently we travel off road - later finding this contravenes the bike hire rules - through scenic shrub-land where the path shrinks to a narrow winding path. Eventually with the ground impossible to ride over we dismount and walk, pushing our bicycles, until we reach the head of a white sand cove. Later we believe this to be Port Hellick but we cannot be certain as we found it impossible to match our memory of the route taken with any map of the island. Making matters both worse and interesting it becomes clear that this beach is being used by a small group of nudists. As silent as we can we cross the sand to reach a path. This joins a road that leads to Old Town where we find more of our group who have taken similar adventurous routes washing their bicycles in the sea water at the foot of the old quay – also contravening hire rules. Sunday Footie
Following heavy overnight rain our scheduled game on Tresco is cancelled and our attentions turn to football and a 6 a side match is hastily arranged on the Garrison—provided we can first purchase a football in the town. With jumpers for goal posts The Seniles of the Tour Party challenge The Juveniles, the cut-off point being the age when each side is equal in number. It is a frenetic affair with players performing as if their careers depend upon the result. Assisted by wind (some of it natural) the Juveniles press towards the Senile goals by a dedicated route one approach. Each attack ends with a trusty boot putting the ball skywards until Gary – a renowned dribbler – signals a change of tactic by standing on the ball and goading someone to tackle him Brazilian style until a crunching tackle fells him. The spats continue, crunching blocks and sliding tackles from both teams. For the record the game ends with a win for the Juveniles (3-1) but only after ‘referee’ Captain Tim bans tackling to preserve limbs and conserve blood. Howlers Corner
(Unsavoury Fact Spoiler) Sunday pm (late) - The combination of beer and snuff (the powder tins are almost empty now) severely challenges the constitutions of some of the team and in a quiet alleyway just off the High Street many throw up. But following a few moments in the later aptly named 'Howlers Corner' they are up and running again! |
