1991 Notes & Anecdotes
Women from the Amazon
Our noisy return to the Garrison wakes a neighbouring camper. “What’s going on?” someone enquires through an unzipped tent. We stand in silence like naughty schoolboys. The woman - holding a torch - is a good six feet in height. Her hair is long, black and curly. “Evening,” says The Minstrel. “Who are you lot?” she enquires. “We are aliens from the planet Zogg,” The Minstrel replies appearing to believe his statement. The woman breaks into a bout of laughter. Peter offers her a drink that is accepted, and she stays for about half an hour until her camping friends collect her. In the morning Peter surmises that the girls are Amazonians. Big Bass Bum
In the Bishop and Wool food is served and the joviality halts until someone starts singing Trelawny. Thereafter we trade tricks, jokes and songs before the desserts arrive. After the table is cleared Dr. Wilson stands on a chair and leads a rousing chorus of ‘My Grandfathers Clock’ before proclaiming to be the music man by singing “I am the music man and I come from down your way, and I can play.” “What can you play?” we enquire. After many renditions of this verse, he stands on his chair and whisks down his trousers, "I can play the big bass bum,” he sings, slapping his buttocks as fast as Lester Piggot searching for an Epson victory. He wobbles unsteadily before falling through the seat of the chair. It is time for us to leave. Thereafter Dr. Wilson is always referred to as Boom a Boom. |

Returning to the Garrison in darkness presents many problems. With only a hint of a road under occasional moonlight PC leading a small group (that includes Jim and Spoons) leave the pathway and fall into the heather and bracken. Here they remain for a considerable time lying on their backs, giggling, chatting and gazing at the heavens. Eventually this off-road experience ends with an encounter with ’a mysterious Green Door’ when in the darkness they attempt to find their way to the Garrison. The Green Door is locked and prevents further progress, causing the group to retrace its steps. The following morning to prove that the green door is not a figment of his imagination Peter leads a small expedition with the quest to find the door in daylight. For a while it proves as elusive as the yeti but finally it is found amidst the centuries old dry moat and broad ramparts of the Star Castle. Sea Shanties in The Mermaid
Saturday evening and Gigs are in battle on the seas. The town is vibrant. Carried with the atmosphere we find ourselves collectively leaning on the harbour wall shouting encouragement at the crews. The crew of the ‘Rhia’ who had led from the start are the first to cross the finishing line and the jubilant team punch the air before diving into the water. We join in the celebrations in The Mermaid where the atmosphere is rowdy. A man with a black beard stands on a table and unaccompanied he taps his foot and begins to sing the traditional Cornish folk song 'The White Rose'. We join in, singing along to this and the medley of songs that follow at the top of our voices, often bumbling the verses and bleating out the choruses. The Arrival of Dr. Wilson
Friday - Without a fixture the St. Agnes club generously offer us their facilities to practice and we are a handful of overs into a game when a man approaches dressed in cricket whites and a sombrero. The game stops. “Wilson. You’ve made it!” Peter quips, offering a firm handshake that causes the Sombrero to slide over Wilson's face. Peter then invites Wilson to strap some pads onto his legs. Wilson insists that he has only come to make up numbers having not played the game for over 20 years. Peter informs him that being the only player dressed for the occasion he must be in the team. After about two hours with the state of the match undetermined and half the team lying on the grass following fatigue after a heavy lunch time ale swilling session in the Turks Head, we agree to declare the result an honourable draw and head back to the pub. |
