1993 Notes & Anecdotes
|
A Tour News Update on 5th August 1993 reports,
The Squad – A motley crew of 18 to man Fraser’s pirate vessel The Black Swan in an attempt to once more wrestle the Ashes* from the Scillies and drink the islands dry. * The mythical urn holds the charred remains of Jim Street’s jock strap, and box which spontaneously combusted moments after Jim scored his first ever run on his 2nd tour in 1992. Kept in memoriam behind the bar at the City Inn (Truro). Their final resting place, an empty bottle of Courage light ale. 1993 squad1. John Abbey

Friday - Boarding the Scillonian we are informed that on account of a vicious swell the journey will be a little rough. These are famous last words for after bravely sipping beer before the ship sails most of us quickly sense that all is not well. Either we have become extremely dizzy, or the boat is spinning. It transpires that we are correct on both counts, the boat is spinning – more like tumbling - and we are dizzy. Those feeling unwell disperse to all corners of the ship including the air-conditioned hospital deck where there are pillows, warm blankets and an endless supply brown paper bags. After almost 3 horrid hours the boat finally docks in St. Marys and the wearily crawl upstairs. Not everyone is poorly. Sea Legs Child has stayed in the bar. On firm ground we wait for our kit to be unloaded then walk to the Garrison. Floyd
Saturday into Sunday morning is a bad, bad night. Without mobile phones, radio or television we have little idea of what is to come. Yes, someone did overhear a casual conversation that it would be quite windy but the remnants a hurricane, no! Floyd had left the coast of America a few days ago having destroyed most of the Florida coast. Had it continued its initial course it should have blown out in mid-Atlantic and at worst dropped a few showers on Western Scotland. Strangely however with the Hoot Toots vulnerable on top of the island Floyd has a rethink and opts to beef up in mid-Atlantic and disrupt the paradise isles. By daylight Jim and Peter's tent is a kite, held to the ground by a solitary peg. They rescue their possessions and retire to the safety of the toilet block. Wet clothing is hung everywhere, and the large tumble drier is crammed full and taking a battering. Cold and hungry we walk to Town to get a breakfast. Walking down the Garrison Hill the rain stings our faces and hands. Fifteen minutes later we find everything is shut. It is Sunday but more to the point the weather is so bad the no one expects anyone to be looking for a breakfast. Desperate for warmth and food The Minstrel bashes on the door of The Pilots Gig where a light illuminates. A man comes to the door dressed in a blue and white apron holding a wet dinner plate and with a tea towel draped over his shoulder. He is clearly shocked at seeing eight drenched men in tee shirts and shorts on such a wet morning. “We are poor souls, seeking sanctuary.” The Minstrel states with the grace of a Benedictine monk. Before the man can answer Peter enquires, “Can you do breakfast?” “I was coming to that.” Quips The Minstrel. “Are we open?” Bellows the man to someone inside the building. “Yes!” Comes the reply. The proprietor sends us to a corner of the room where we can drip freely onto a tiled floor. As our clothes dry, we steam and turn the room into a sauna. Bizarrely this establishment offers all the components of a cooked breakfast but not a cooked breakfast per se. Undaunted we each order copious quantities of breakfast items and share. Bryher - The First Time
On our final day our group splits. Some embark on a jolly period of pub crawling on St. Marys, whilst others make a trip to Bryher- a first for the Hoot Toots. After a civilised mid- morning pot of tea in a quiet café (Fraggle Rock) we walk over the headland to Hells Bay that contrary to its reputation, is a millpond. We later cross a pebbled beach, play in the stone maze, and enjoy a quick round of pitch and put before eating a lunch of venison sandwiches in the famous Hells Bay Hotel. Catching the boat back to St. Mary's we have time to reflect on our most disrupted tour to date. The Scillonian III awaits, and our return journey is calm. We arrive in Truro (The City Arms) just after eight o’clock and sink another beer before heading for home. |
