Roll Over Beethoven
Our decision to equip with musical instruments is an opportunity to experience bedlam at close quarters. Peter taps a triangle to gain attention. "Gentleman, as we shall soon be flying, a rendition of the Dam busters theme seems appropriate. One, two three!" Mule plucks the cat gut on his toy banjo at an alarming rate. H and Plums fill their lungs with air then burst the reeds of plastic saxophones. Stuart sucks and blows his mouth organ. Penny whistles, pipes and tambourines complete the orchestra. "Brilliant!" Child yells, "I feel that we can soon progress and take on Beethoven." Picnic
St. Martins - We land at Higher Town just before eleven, arriving at the ground to see a dedicated officer of the cricket club sweeping rabbit excavations back into the holes. "We've had a plague of the little buggers this year," he explains. This fact is later officially recorded in our scorebook. 'Bright and sunny. Wind South East, Force 2/3. Ground very dry. Some re-growth after drought. Rabbits still a bloody nuisance.' Our arrival on the islands is at the wrong end (no pubs). Without transport the effort required to walk to Lower Town (and therefore treat us to the delights of the Seven Stones pub), is unthinkable. Nonetheless we scale the steep rising, scenic twisting roadway into Higher Town in the hope that we can hitch a lift. But stumbling upon the local Post Office and General Stores we develop the idea to pack a box with wine, fine cheeses, bread, biscuits, and picnic on the white sands of Par Beach beside the ground. A great idea. On the golden sand Cookie pushes the corks into the bottles of dry white wine and Welsh Alan carves the chunks of cheese into perfect squares using his faithful Swiss Army Penknife. An upturned box begins life as a table. At three o'clock we return to the cricket ground to find the same dedicated officer of the Cricket Club embroiled in a cloud of dust, tirelessly flattening the rabbit mounds in the outfield. Green Flash
On our return journey over the water from St. Agnes our boatman brings the boat to a halt. As we bobble, he points to the deep orange sunset on the horizon and explains that once every blue moon the sun dips below the horizon in a green flash. We watch until the sun disappears but pretty though it is, it is not a blue moon tonight! Anorakhnophobia
The horror theme brings an ingenious guise from Carlos who dresses as a train spotter under the title Anorakhaphobia. In each public house he pours himself a cup of tea from a flask, writes copious notes in a journal, and asks unsuspecting people for the location of the St. Marys train station and for details of the next train to Penzance. |
