2009 Notes & Anecdotes
Mappa Tassie
Friday - A delightful tour dinner is experienced in the Atlantic where almost of us opt for the novelty of a volcanic stone sizzler – where we cook our own meat at the table on a super-hot pebble. It’s cracking fun and a good meal. Meanwhile on our Australian tour Peter is kept amused by a reference to the Mappa Tassie - Australian slang for the map of Tasmania and a woman's ... Moving swiftly on. The evening finishes with a bizarre legal lock in at the Bishop. Ridiculous licensing laws that enable the pub to open until 2.00pm but first require it to be closed for half an hour after 11.00pm. Despite sitting quietly in the pub at 10.00pm we are literally thrown out onto a cold dark Hugh Town street by an apologetic barmaid returning at 11.30pm when the pub re-opens. Mistaken ID
Saturday and we had been reported to the Campsite owner for making too much noise and using foul and abusive language after dark. This genuinely seems likely to be a case of mistaken identity as at the time of the alleged crime most of us are in town (lock in remember) and those at the campsite, are our convalescing seniors Jim, Undy and Fat Nige. We explain this to the site owner adding that although Jim can swear on occasion it is unlikely that he is the cause of the alleged rumpus. Toe Roote (not Joe Root)
Saturday morning is spent on the hot sands of Porthcressa. We entertain ourselves by a game of Toe-Roote. The challenge is to see who can kick one of our blow up kangaroos the farthest from a standing position. Oddly enough our convalescing seniors enjoy the competition more than most and line up to take turns to roote the poor fellow on the sand. Gentleman Jim wins the competition. In a victory speech Jim states it should be an Olympic discipline. |

The mythical urn holds the charred remains of Jim Street’s jock strap, and box which spontaneously combusted moments after Jim scored his first ever run on his 2nd tour in 1992. Kept in memoriam behind the bar at the City Inn (Truro). Their final resting place, an empty bottle of Courage light ale. Surprise
Sunday - The tour almost ended Cloaky celebrates by buying his mates Blade and Frigbo a drink. “What do you want?” he asks. “Don’t know. Surprise us Cloaky,” Blade replies. Cloaky returns with the most disappointing ‘surprise drink’ ever – a bottle of lager. Pagan Clock?
Friday - The call to visit St. Agnes proves too great a temptation and we are soon boat hopping to the island. Despite their hotel entrance being a few steps from the departure point the Swindon boys miss the ferry and by the time they arrive on St. Agnes the first party of Hoot Toots has enjoyed a first beverage in the Turks. On a walk on Gugh we encounter an ‘ancient’ stone sundial that is in the process of being constructed! Peter is cajoled into adding a 13th hour but eventually opts to add a missing ‘9’ to this modern pagan timepiece, taking an age to do so complaining that he is unable to spell nine in numbers. We walk around the Gugh following the ancient ramblers' paths but return via short cut carved by Cloaky who is determined to walk in a straight-line smash through the ferns and fauna by using his feet and a stick. We leave the island at around 3 o’clock to the sound of Tucks tripping over the dog's bowl at the door of the Turks. |
