The Self-Appointed Tour Director of Cricket
Sunday - At the New Inn the Boy Wonder is elected Captain for the day and immediately pleads with Tucks not to play. With the sudden news of his playing days being officially over the highlights of his 40 years of cricket flash before his eyes - in real time this takes about a second. A press conference follows when Jim reports Tucks retirement from cricket and proclaims him as ‘The new Self-Appointed Tour Director of Cricket’. Jim makes Tucks repeat his new title several times. |
The Great Tomato Ketchup Incident
On the morning of 20th September 2010, the peace and tranquillity of a routine breakfast in the Bishop and Wolf public house is broken by a massive explosion. Uncertain if the attack is by Al Qaeda, Al Murray or Al Gore the bar instantly fills with an atmosphere of shock and surprise. What happened someone asks? This happened someone replies, pointing at Tucks who is covered head to toe in the red stuff....tomato ketchup. KP finds the entire incident incredibly funny and cries with laughter whilst pointing at blobs of ketchup slowly running down Tuck’s waistcoat. Tucks also finds the episode hilarious and giggles and cries along with KP. Reggats having taken much of the blast is less amused – he’s wearing his Sunday best. “My best top,” he says, “Oh no it’s on my best trousers, and my best shoes.” Despite being the closest to Tucks, Hunty is oblivious to the kafuffle and bizarrely does not have a drop of the red stuff splashed upon him. Pente according to evidence in the fines book ‘acted suspiciously before and during the explosion’ and afterwards gave a remarkably accurate account of what happened. “Tucks opened the top of the ketchup squeezed the bottle and the entire contents evacuated under pressure of the air inside”. The Police remain interested in the case whilst and insurance claim is satisfied by the pub landlords for new curtains and the cost of cleaning the windows. |
A Boy-Wonderful Ton
Let’s be frank about it. When you are on tour, sleeping rough, drinking beer etc., the last thing that you are expecting your body to do is to concentrate long enough to compile a century innings. Most of us are content to record a couple of textbook boundaries and a deft tickle for one or two. Happy that we have made a positive contribution to the game and no made a Charlie of ourselves we return to the pavilion bat held high. This routine is not subscribed to by the Boy Wonder in 2010, who despite turning up on tour with a hangover and only a wink of sleep, proceeds to break almost all batting records. Courtesy of his magic wand he smacks an undefeated 74 runs against the Doctors on the Garrison in the blink of an eyelid - a knock that includes eleven boundaries including two massive sixes that land in the garden of a holiday cottage. Moreover, one day later with barely any sleep the previous night Thomas starts his innings at Pool Green with a four and smacks a total of 15 boundaries compiling a Hoot Toots record of 107, prompting Jim to suggest that if the Boy Wonder comes next year, he will probably score more runs than his father who has been coming here for 20 years. It’s fair point! |
Peter's 1,000 runs on tour milestone
A scandal has erupted following the Hoot Toots successful tour of Scillies in 2011. At Penzance heliport, Captain Child and other Hoot Toot players were questioned by police over claims they were involved in a betting scam. In his first unofficial duty the Self-Appointed Tour Director of Cricket Tucks said, “Hoot Toots cricket is not institutionally corrupt and the claims were unproven, cannot be proven and it would have to be proved if the claims could be proven", adding “Having just said this Captain Child has been well out of form with the bat throughout the tour so how he actually made the 45 runs to reach his personal milestone remains a mystery.” A corrupt newspaper later claims it may have paid middlemen to assist Child Snr (without his knowledge) to score the runs, alleging that back-handers were given to bowlers to deliver rank long hops to Child and to fielders to make deliberate miss fields. There is also suggestion of an emergency plan being hatched to try and bribe the most respected Hoot Toots scorer Jim Street to fiddle the records by adding the odd run or two to Child’s total. Jim later stated, "There is no need to do this as Peeta can score 'em on his own accord." Mystery also surrounds Child’s dismissal immediately after he scores two runs to take him to exactly 1000. Child later said the allegations, “Were completely untrue and had served to remove the gloss from his side's victory. The mood inside the Hoot Toots camp was rather grey. Hoot Toots cricket was in the headlines for the wrong reasons. I am not prepared to comment on the specific allegations, but clearly it has been a rough day." For the record - 49 Innings, 9 Not Out, 1003 Runs, 71 Highest. 21st Tour. |
