White Island Ramble
White Island is one of the larger unpopulated islands of the Isles of Scilly and lies off the coast of the northernmost populated island of the group, St Martin's, to which it is joined by a tidal causeway, or isthmus. The island is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Geological Conservation Review site and is managed by the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust on behalf of the Duchy of Cornwall. In September 2016 with the causeway accessible due to a very low tide and after walking around the 'iron age' maze close by, members of the Hoot Toots stormed bullishly into the SSSI for a firsthand view of the cleft of Chad Girt (not to be confused with Fat Nigel’s Girth), which almost cuts the island in two. Great Bay Tresco
Folklore says that In September 1923 the Ball brothers, Bouncy, Roundy, Black, Footie and Noah - also known as the ‘Famous Five’ - became the first to swim from Guther’s Island to Crump Island (Tean) - an area known as ‘The Vault’ - between St. Martins and Tresco (a distance of approximately one statute mile), reputedly the coldest waters in the British Isles. in 2016 the Hoot Toots swim dream team of TBW, Gribsy, Hutch and Beers take up the challenge of being the second group to cross The Vault. “Piece of cake.” comments an upbeat Beers as he slips his shorts on. The other lads are similarly high in confidence until they wade into a small channel of water on a low tide screaming like overexcited schoolgirls. After three minutes of splashing around like mazed hippopotami they return to the beach, frozen solid. “Sod that for a game of soldiers.” Hutch states. Their attempt to make history is abruptly abandoned. Whoops!
Late Friday in the self-catering apartment and Reggats' has tripped in the main corridor where two floor levels fail to match by about three inches, spilling red wine d over a large area of wall and carpet. The wall white and carpet cream there is little place to hide. Much time and energy is spent by mopping up the infected areas with soap, water carpet cleaner and a host of other products found under the kitchen sink. The result is a wet carpet but no stain and a dark grey blotch on a white wall. A dehumidifier is used to dry the carpet and the next day emulsion paint purchased from the island DIY store is brushed it over the stain. The stain is covered but the colour of the erased stain does not perfectly match the existing wall, so a section of the wall is painted. Second and third coats follow. The house has subsequently been sold and re-decorated - but not on account of our mishap....and Ben takes home the surplus paint on the Scillonian! Mr. Octoberfest
For our trek to St. Martins we are broadly dressed as Mr. Men characters. It proves an odd affair with many strange Mr. Men characters being invented. Plums steals the show dressed in lederhosen and piping loudly original German Oktoberfest folk music from his mobile. His inability to shut up annoys everyone….except Reggats who takes every opportunity to sing along. The Blade, dressed as Mr. Zebra looks like a member of the band Kiss. Child Snr is dressed in a bottle of ale as Mr. Wibbly-Wobbly. Rich and Remo cover themselves in bandages and fake blood to become Mr. Bump and Mr. Bump (un-related) respectively. Tango and Moff take the more traditional approach as Mr. Tickle and Mr. Happy respectively. Golf - a mention.
The previous evening Peter demands that we meet at the Clubhouse in th morning at 11.00am sharp, adding "Don't forget!" But at 11.00am sharp Peter is missing. We pass time playing pool. Peter arrives at noon sharp and is chastised for his lateness for even the Gribster reappeared on time. As the first players tee off, we look out to sea. It’s a beautiful day, the boats appear to be running and we anticipate that after many failed attempts our non-golfers will finally reach their holy grail, Bryher. We soon learn that this year is no different - Bryher is out of bounds due to shallow water. Golf day is again an enjoyable experience. We keep dry and are comforted by pleasant sunshine. The winners of the first 9 holes by one glorious shot (TBW, Tucks and Gribbs) are disqualified for playing off the ladies' tees. In his defence Captain Tom stated that he may be colour blind. After the back nine is played Gribbs is once again disqualified for hooking a drive at a bizarre angle to cause unrest to a golfer practicing a few shots miles away from harm's way. |
