2. Peter Child 3. Bill Cook (Cookie) (39) 4. Tim Cundy (Munchkin) 5. Andy Giles 6. Rich Higman 7. Peter Hopwood (Hoppy) 8. Peter Scott (40) 9. Neil Spencer 10. Jim Street (Gentleman Jim) (41) 11. Paul Tucker (Tucks) 12. Tim Wiltshire (Captain Tim) Green = Debut, (xx) = 'Cap' number. Jim's First Bowl
“Any thoughts on the field?” shouts Captain Tim from the mid-wicket boundary. “It’s green and rather pleasant,” Jim replies adding, “Put them where you like. It doesn’t matter.” Jim drops his pipe behind the stumps, hands the Umpire his tobacco pouch and floppy red hat, rolls up his sleeves, then fidgets and fumbles before tossing the ball in the air. After two overs he is retired from the attack, knackered, in need of a stiff drink and a drag of nicotine. Village Hall Tea - St. Agnes
Between innings we are led to the village hall, an old building which in 2017 forms part of the new social and sporting complex beside the meadow. Therein tea has painstakingly been prepared by the good ladies on the island. Lying on starched white tablecloths are the most amazing sandwiches ever made - crab and avocado, cottage cheese and beetroot, beef and horseradish. For those with a savoury tooth sausage rolls ooze in savoury juices and hot meat pies come alive as the soft pastry lids rise under pressure of the steam inside. Gentleman Jim for one is gobsmacked. “Best tea ever.” He comments and he is not wrong. Speedboat to the Rescue
Friday - St. Agnes - The Landlord peers anxiously through the window, hoping to find a boat arriving but there is no sign of life on the horizon. A telephone call is made to St. Mary’s. The conversation is difficult to follow but it appears that with deteriorating weather there is a debate amongst the Boatmen’s Association whether it is safe to send out a vessel. A boat sets off, arriving with news that only 12 passengers can be carried because only 12 lifejackets are available. Captain Tim resigns himself to spending a night in the Turks but when an offer is made by an islander for one player to accompany him to St. Marys in a speedboat Peter bravely volunteers for the trip. Later at St. Marys we await Peter's arrival. Eventually he rolls up in The Atlantic soaked to the skin and covered in seaweed. Whilst packing his pipe with damp tobacco he explains that his life had flashed before him many times. "It was pitch dark. The boatman was a psychopath!" |
