1992 Notes & Anecdotes
To the Eastern Isles
Sunday am. The day begins awkwardly when we realize that we are on the wrong boat and heading towards a clump of small uninhabited islands. Stuck, we enjoy the ride. Our confusion ends with a few words from the boatman from an extremely weather-beaten public address system. “Welcome to the tour of the Eastern isles. Full of natural beauty, lover-ly birds, ex-zotic seals and puffins galore!” The commentary continues, “On the left of the back of the boat is Great Arthur—a nautical landmark. You may catch a curlew or two landing on the top. The curlews in turn may be catching a few fish for breakfast.” Many of the passenger’s scuttle to the port side and raise cameras with huge lenses, wasting photographic film at frantic rates. “To the front of the left of the boat....over there (the boatman points) in the distance er to the left of the marker buoy er is a puffin, I think!” The directions and descriptions are far from accurate but strangely compelling to listen to. The mention of a puffin causes the passengers to fight for a vantage point and the boat rocks violently. The boatman skilfully handles the roll then says, “Thankfully it wasn’t a seal or we would have rolled over. I think there’s a seal over there but don’t get too excited as it could be an old tyre,” croaks the commentary as the craft creeps towards a cluster of small rocks where a group of seals bobble in the water. Cries of delight follow amidst frantic re-focusing of lenses and the clatter of camera shutters. Eventually the boatman heads towards St. Martin’s and the climate changes dramatically. The salty sea breeze drops, and the temperature becomes humid and sub-tropical. The boat crawls over shallow water into a berthing slot at the front of a small stone jetty. The round island trip had taken almost two hours. This is Lower Town, and we head for the hotel, a modern plush and purpose-built building. Spoons' Commentary on our Boat Return
Monday St. Martins - At around 8.00pm we hop onto the boat in darkness at the Lower Town quay. Once out at sea under the stars the public address system whines. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen this is your captain speaking.” The voice is that of Spoons. “On the left of the front of the back of the right of the boat is Great Arthur. If it was daylight, you would be able to see a curlew or two crapping on the top. <pause> To your left is the St. Marys radio mast. Hang your washing on it at your peril.” |

-------------------------- Message Contents ---------------------------- The Garrison camp site rang yesterday to say that the two - six berth tents we (thought) we hired are currently ripped to pieces. and floating in Scilly sound. Lovely bank holiday weather was it not? I have organised two two-berthers so we need tents for ten – I have a tent for three or maybe a very cosy four - what else can we adventure scouts produce? Note airbeds, crockery etc still OK. It’s just the tents we need. Early reply appreciated. Peter |
