2015 Notes & Anecdotes
|
"World Tour theme. You are invited to present yourself in the 'fancy' dress of a country of your choosing. Your dress code must suggest the country you represent, and you will bring with you an animal (preferably blown up or stuffed) that you believe represents your country."
2015 squad1. Will Barnecut (Beers)
2. Peter Child 3. Heather Child 4. Ben Conroy 5. Nigel Davies (Fat Nige) 6. Tony Gardner (Tango) 7. Paul Gribble (Gribsy) 8. Richard Hunt (Hunty) 9. Martin Hutchings (Hutch) 10. Paul Moffat (Moff/Mule) 11. Ian Moore (Remo\Bumpo) 12. Jake Moore 13. Bill Sherwood Snr 14. Paul Sherwood (Blade) 15. Nathan Toms (Tomsy) 16. Paul Tucker (Tucks) 17. Geoff Warring (Reggats) Woodentop Legs
Sunday - St. Marys - It is raining again but following advice from the boatmen we travel to Tresco. Father Blade is in no doubt as regards the state of the weather, wearing a luminous poncho and holding a big umbrella. However, by the time we reach Tresco the sun has miraculously returned, and we are able to sit comfortably in the stunning terrace of the New Inn. Here Tango is accused of having Woodentop legs. As his white pins glisten in the sunlight Blade asks him how he keeps his strings hidden. Boom a Boom Recalled
St. Marys Golf Club - A tour supper follows, expertly cooked by the sole barman/chef and served by his mate. Fuelled by a few tots of wine and filled with the excitement of a good day on tour Moff is in fine fettle. First, he takes a ceremonial sword off the wall and begins to randomly knight others. Then he embarks upon a period of excessive Father Ted quotes. And finally, as the post dinner period transforms into complete mayhem, he opts to pay a personal tribute to a past Hoot Tooter -Boom a Boom Wilson by standing on a chair, bearing his bottom and smacking his right cheek with his right hand. It's time for us to leave. Remo 1, Cricket Ball 0.
Facing a short, pitched deliveries is not easy at any stage of an innings especially first ball on a dodgy artificial wicket in a friendly match. The ball in question hits Remo on the forehead but like a champion boxer he does not go down. Heather, scoring, is horrified. "Has he been hit?" she enquires as blood spirts from is forehead in all directions. Remo is rushed to hospital in a taxi accompanied by a concerned Rich and a sympathetic Heather who treats him as if he is one of her prized horses that has suddenly turned lame. Peter has less sympathy for his injured team mate and yells, “What hymns do you want at your funeral,” as the young lad is ‘stretchered’ off. This shocking outburst brings back memories of his baiting of the Doctors by shouting across a crowded harbour side, “Two nil, two nil” after they had lost against The Hoot Toots and St. Martins in 2012. Remo returns with the appearance of an old, much loved, stitched up teddy bear having had 10 stitches sown into his skull by a Polish matron who had served her time with the Visegrád Battlegroup under Polish Defence Minister Bogdan Klich. Bandaged like Palin in a Fish Called Wanda and possibly a little concussed, Remo insists that he plays on. After taking the field to help the Hoot Toots defend a small total, he is soon rapped on his knee with a bobbling ball sustaining an injury that he recalls gave him more pain and discomfort that almost losing an eye. Golf Soak
On our arrival we find the Club House in a curious form. It has the feeling of being derelict. We are met by a young lad who claims to be the barman, chef, greenkeeper and odd job man. When he turns some lights on and opens the bar things seem different. A draw is made, and two teams emerge raring to battle. From an adjacent shed the young barman finds 10 ‘odd’ sets of clubs with bags and balls. The weather forecast is horrid but regardless of the impending low south westerly we agree to play 18 holes of golf and stay out regardless. After 9 holes we congregate in the Clubhouse and enjoy an ale filled lunch. This it transpires was a big mistake as had we not stopped our round, we would have kept dry rather than play the back nine in torrential rain. On our return to the 19th we wring out our collective tops and underpants into an old mop bucket, that fills alarmingly quickly. The club house becomes a laundrette when tops, pants, socks, jeans are hung up to dry. With the hand dryer in the Gents toilet out of action the one in the Ladies toilet takes a hammering. Thank goodness we have the Clubhouse to ourselves. With rainfall lashing the windows Tango wringing out his underpants realises this is the only pair he has available on tour. him. "I didn't ack any spare," he laments. As it is the sole pair that he now rests on a window sill and drip onto a luke warm radiator. Regardless he is in a reflective mood. “Isn’t it weird how you cannot see the wind?” he questions. |
